The current Rotband “Product Integrity” of German Automotive Industry Association VDA explicitly points out the significance of active market and product observation for product safety: Thus, the monitoring of product recall portals and public consumer feedback on own and competitor products is a crucial requirement during the utilization phase.

While market observation focusses mainly on changing customer requirements or habits and behaviour modification of competitors, preventative product observation in the field focusses on media research including also the Internet and Social Media.

Thus, VDA points out that the monitoring of online sources is not a “nice to have”, but a crucial part of the corporate product observation.
